Grand Prix of Sweden 1978, Scandinavian Raceway Anderstorp. In 1978 Ronnie was again in a champion car for the year, namely Lotus, but as second driver in the JPS team. The fastest in qualifying was the American Mario Andretti in a John Player Special MKIII Lotus ahead of John Watson, Northern Ireland with the Austrian Niki Lauda Brabham BT46 Fancar in third. Ronnie did not quite get it, but a fourth place was still acceptable. This race is one of the most talked about races in history as Niki Lauda won by quite a margin by 34 seconds ahead of the Italian Ricardo Patrese in the Arrow Mclaren and Ronnie had the race of his life after a puncture forced him to come in to change tires. It was not like today when it takes 2 seconds to change tires, but a number of seconds more... He came out in 17th place but was able to stand on the podium after a heroic race. Although he had the speed to pass Patrese, he never opened up a gap and Ronnie had to settle for third place, which was still an incredible achievement. According to Ronnie himself, this was his best F1 race ever. Lauda and Watson's Brabham BT46 Fancar was banned after this race as it sucked up all the gravel and dust from the track and sent it out behind the car and this was then classified as a safety hazard.
